The Challenge
Sustainability initiatives continue to reshape the foodservice industry, challenging brands to balance environmental goals with real-world packaging performance. For large restaurant chains, even a small packaging material change can have significant operational implications across delivery, carryout, product quality, and customer experience.
When Pizza Hut explored incorporating recycled polypropylene into its Wing Bowl packaging, maintaining performance standards remained a top priority. The company needed confidence that the updated packaging would continue to perform reliably throughout the ordering, transport, and customer use experience.
The Solution
To support this initiative, Pizza Hut partnered with Clear Packaging Laboratories to develop and execute a comprehensive testing strategy focused on validating packaging performance under real-world conditions.
Recognizing the importance of understanding the operational environment firsthand, Clear’s dedicated Projects Team traveled to Pizza Hut’s headquarters in Plano, Texas, to observe the full process from order preparation through delivery and pickup. This collaborative approach gave the team a clear understanding of how the Wing Bowl functioned within actual restaurant operations and helped identify the most critical performance requirements.
Based on these observations, CPL worked closely with Pizza Hut to develop a customized testing plan designed to evaluate key performance characteristics of the updated packaging.
Testing included:
- Material strength assessments
- Seal closure integrity testing
- Insulation and thermal performance evaluations
- Additional packaging performance assessments tailored to the application
By combining laboratory testing with operational context, the team was able to generate meaningful performance data aligned with real-world use conditions.
The Outcome
Through collaborative testing and data-driven validation, Pizza Hut was able to move forward confidently with the rollout of its updated Wing Bowl packaging, utilizing recycled polypropylene.
The partnership helped ensure the new packaging solution supported the company’s sustainability objectives while continuing to meet the performance expectations necessary for delivery and carryout operations.

At Clear Packaging Laboratories, we understand that packaging changes often require more than standard testing alone. By combining technical expertise with a practical understanding of real-world applications, we help companies evaluate packaging performance with confidence as they navigate innovation, sustainability goals, and evolving operational demands.
